Yoga Benefits on the Lymphatic System

The lymphatic system is an important part of the immune system, consisting of vessels that transport lymph fluid from organ to organ, fighting infections and removing cellular waste. It works hand-in-hand with the circulatory system by removing excess fluid from the blood vessels and maintaining a healthy balance of fluid within our bodies.

When the lymphatic system is not working to optimum levels, complications within the human body can arise including fluid retention, infections, blockages, and even cancer. When we hold tension, we are harming ourselves physically and mentally. We are stopping the flow of emotion, and restricting the flow of lymph, and possibly constraining our circulation.

Yoga is one of the leading forms of exercise that can aid in the health of our lymphatic system. Many yoga poses, as well as stretching, encourage proper draining of lymph fluid, and prevent and treat lymphedema, a condition of fluid retention that can cause severe swelling.

By keeping the joint capsules supple and in their full range of motion we are naturally more set up for lymphatic drainage.

Common yoga poses that aid lymphatic drainage include but are not limited to:

  • Child’s pose

  • Downward dog

  • Cat-cow pose

  • Standing forward bend

  • Bridge pose

Other tools we can use in stimulating the lymphatic system:

  • Healthy eating

  • Herbal teas and nourishing herbal infusions

  • Exercise

  • Deep breathing techniques

  • Massage

  • Acupuncture

Please seek medical care if you suspect any improper function of the lymphatic system, including extreme swelling as this may be a potential indication of a more serious medical condition.
