Guilt and Self-Care

We go about our daily routine, power through the grind, and take care of what needs to be done. We make our priority lists, check off our to-do’s one-by-one. We carefully plan our schedule, trying to fit in time for each of our loved ones in between meetings, events, dentist appointments, and errands.

And then comes the guilt, and the long list of reasons why we just don’t have time. If you are a perfectionist, you might even feel guilty as you accomplish one task, leaving another undone. If you suffer from this kind of self-imposed pressure, how could you possibly let yourself slow down enough to take a “me” day?

This is especially true for those who suffer from mental and emotional exhaustion. Motivation levels can run very low, and we make every excuse in the book for why we don’t take action. Obstacles may be real or imagined. Sometimes we are trapped by our own anxiety, feeling stuck and unable to move forward.

Even if you feel well supported at home, it can be tough to allow yourself time to focus on your own wellbeing. And so you may find yourself running on auto-pilot, or worse, running out of gas.

We all need to fill our tank from time to time. When we don’t, we break down. Our bodies suffer and our fuses run short. It’s not just us who pay the price, but those around us.

Self care IS an important part of your health. Self care is taking time out of your busy day and focusing on something YOU like to do. It could be a hobby, like sewing, knitting or reading. It might be self-reflection, like journaling and meditation. Perhaps you enjoy punching a boxing bag, or taking a quiet walk in the park. Maybe it’s a long overdue talk with a friend, or a night out.

Or it could be a mindful yoga practice in a beautiful studio surrounded by new friends.
